My favourite simple falling asleep trick is to count my breath. One in, two out three in etc. You count up to ten then start again. The joy of this is you can't think while you are doping it so it calms runaway thoughts. When you first do this you probably won't get to ten or find you've gone over the ten but just start again at one. Don't alter your breathing but observe how you are breathing. I find this works a treat and can even be used to create calm when you are awake.

This is great! Thank you! I hadn't heard of the BBC report - Just listened to a few minutes and I was dozing off ;) The getting back to sleep and stopping the busy mind. Also, this will be nice if my husband is snoring and can tune him out. ;)

Thank you for sharing this information. I fall asleep easily but wake up in the middle of the night. Will listen to the BBC weather report tonight.

Thank you. For some reason the TED Radio Hour podcast often helps me to fall asleep.

Getting enough sleep is difficult for everyone but especially parents. Parents of young children need to get up during the night to calm or feed their child. And parents of older children often stay up to help with homework and wait for children to get home before curfew. Thank you for sharing this research to remind us how important it is to take care of ourselves by getting enough sleep!
